In Vanity Fair’s July issue, Tatum tells Cohen that his father worked as a roofer right up to the day he fell through a roof and broke his back. Though he recovered, he could never again do heavy labor and consequently became a salesman. Tatum’s father channeled his dreams into his son, stressing education, but Tatum struggled. “I read so slow,” he tells Cohen. “If I have a script I’m going to read it five times slower than any other actor, but I’ll be able to tell you everything in it. It kills me that there are standardized tests geared towards just one kind of child.”

Another important difference between him and his father, Tatum tells Cohen, is that, as a result of his negative experience with study drugs, he’ll never medicate his child for learning disabilities. “I truly believe some people need medication,” he says. “I did not. I did better at school when I was on it, but it made me a zombie. You become obsessive. Dexedrine, Adderall. It’s like any other drug. It’s like coke, or crystal meth. The more you do, the less it works. For a time, it would work well. Then it worked less and my pain was more. I would go through wild bouts of depression, horrible comedowns. I understand why kids kill themselves. I absolutely do. You feel terrible. You feel soul-less. I’d never do it to my child.”

Tatum thought the baby was going to be a girl. When initially asked about the gender, he told Cohen, “My wife thinks boy. I think girl.”

Reflecting on the nature of celebrity, Tatum tells Cohen, “I don’t remember who said it, but I do believe that whatever age you become famous, you end up staying that age. Because from that point you’re not asked to be a normal citizen. I broke through at 24 or 25. I had lived a pretty diverse life. When I was finally making money, I knew exactly what I needed … $5.67. I’d have one meal a day. I would go to Checkers and get the No. 1 with everything.”

Tatum thinks people who attain fame earlier in life have it much harder. “I worry about Bieber, man. That kid’s wildly talented. I hope he doesn’t fall down into the usual ways of young kids because it’s so hard for someone to be responsible when they’re not asked to be. We’re not asked to do things ourselves. You have someone there with a coffee. ‘You want food? I’ll get you food.’ I put my bag in the trunk yesterday—I can’t drive here—so my driver, great guy, Terry, amazing, I call him T-Bone, I drop my bag in and left the trunk open. And I get around to my door, and I’m like, ‘What the fuck am I doing? That’s not my behavior.’ ”

He and wife Jenna Dewan-Tatum welcomed daughter Everly on Friday, May 31 in London, they announced on their respective websites.

Both parents posted “Welcome to the World!” with the message: “Jenna Dewan-Tatum and Channing Tatum are thrilled to announce the birth of their daughter, Everly Tatum, who was born on May 31st in London. Sending love and light to Chan, Jenna, and Ms. Everly!”

It is the first child for the couple, who wed in 2009 after meeting on the set of Step Up. They announced their pregnancy in December.

Everly arrived in London, where the couple has been residing while Tatum, 33, films Jupiter Ascending with Mila Kunis.

In April, Dewan-Tatum, 32, told Glamour her husband has been a supportive-bordering-on-indulgent pregnancy partner.

“Channing has been great. He takes the route of no confrontation, just support, saying things like, ‘Do whatever you want! What do you want to eat? I’m going to leave it up to you,’” she said.

Meanwhile, the actor admitted he’s clueless when it comes to one key aspect of parenting — diaper duty.

“I have never changed a diaper before, so I may need some help learning,” Tatum told PEOPLE earlier this year. “I don’t have friends who have kids, so it’s going to be an interesting experience to learn how to change a diaper. I hope I don’t have any problems where the diaper falls off and the baby poops on the ground.”

Tatum, 33, and Dewan-Tatum, 32, announced they were expecting their first child in December. The couple met on the set of Step Up in 2006, and tied the knot in July 2009.

Throughout the pregnancy, the parents-to-be maintained their busy work schedules. “We’re going to actually have the baby in London while I’m shooting, and then there will be no downtime whatsoever after that,” Tatum told Ryan Seacrest in an interview about filming Jupiter Ascending in the UK.

Production of Tatum’s new film is set to move to Chicago in July, and his wife will begin work on her fall Lifetime series, Witches of East End, in Vancouver around the same time.

“The baby will get top billing as far as priorities go,” a source tells Us. “Channing is going to be the most adorable hands-on daddy ever and do whatever is necessary to make sure Jenna can balance it all.”

“You have to want it,” Tatum, 33, tells Cosmopolitan in its July issue. “Jenna’s and my thing is checking in with each other all the time, like, ‘On a scale from one to 10, how much do you love me right now?’ And you gotta be honest, and you’ve got to want an honest answer.”

Although he’s about to become the Sexiest Dad Alive, the upcoming White House Down star admits he does have a side that isn’t all that appealing.

“I’m a fat kid on the inside,” Tatum says. “I love food so much, and I fluctuate about 25-30 pounds between movies. I feel like I have to do a chess movie that requires very little movement at some point, just so I can eat pizza and play chess on the beach all day. And then eat more pizza and cheeseburgers and drink beer. That’d be amazing. I’d give anything for that. I gotta figure that movie out.”

When he’s not working, spending time with his wife, 32, or eating, the actor is busy taking heat from his pals.

“My friends keep me grounded,” he says. “It’s embarrassing to tell you how much my friends make fun of me. Seriously, when you have a doll made of your face, it’s ridiculous how creative your friends can get … pictures, videos, little animated cartoons they’ve made. And they’re way, way not PG-13. So I get chopped down to size all the time.”

In White House Down, Channing Tatum plays John Cale, a police officer who takes his daughter on a tour of the White House only to realize he’s the only person who can save the president (Jamie Foxx) from a violent invasion, Moviefone.com reports.

The explosion-heavy film comes from director Roland Emmerich – who also directed Independence Day, The Day After Tomorrow and 2012. Tatum, 32, is no stranger to playing an action hero – he’s also starring in G.I. Joe: Retaliation with Bruce Willis. And playing a dad should come naturally to the actor, who is expecting his first child with wife Jenna Dewan-Tatum.

White House Down arrives in theaters June 28.

“I’m more macho than all those guys,” the actress, perhaps best known for TV’s Friday Night Lights (2006-11), boasts to PEOPLE. “You spend that much time with them – you hear them burp, fart – you immediately become one of the dudes.”

Tatum, it seems, also did something even more for the gang.

Speaking at New York’s Drive In Studios during an Axe Face event earlier this month, Palicki, 29, said of PEOPLE’s 2012 Sexiest Man Alive: “He’s a goofball. I love the guy so much. He’s a clown, and he would randomly break into song and dance when it was suppose to be serious. He kept everybody laughing.”

Though she ducked a question on whether she has a current romantic interest (“Oh ? I don’t know”), she does admit to having a type when asked if she’d choose between Friday Night Lights’s studly but troubled Tim Riggins (Taylor Kitch) or sweet and sensitive Landry Clarke (Jesse Plemons).

“Probably Riggins when I was younger, but I’m going to say Landry now that I’m older,” she says. “I want someone who is stable and awesome, and a good person who treats me well.”

G.I. Joe: Retaliation opens March 28.
