Channing Tatum’s upcoming movie about male strippers just added another choice piece of meat: Matthew McConaughey.
The latter actor, 41, will play a former exotic dancer who owns the club where Tatum’s title character works in Steven Soderbergh’s indie drama Magic Mike, Variety reports.
The movie, which also stars the British actor Alex Pettyfer, 21, is loosely based on Tatum’s own experiences working as a teen stripper in Tampa.
“Look, I’m not proud of it,” Tatum, 31, said last year of having once been a stripper. “But I’m not ashamed of it.”

Channing Tatum and wife Jenna Dewan were locked at the hip and laughing over dinner at Asia de Cuba inside L.A.’s Mondrian Hotel. Dewan was co-hosting the private dinner with her The Playboy Club costar Laura Benanti in honor of the NBC show and Benanti’s birthday. Guests, including Taye Diggs, dined al fresco and enjoyed sparkling wine with the meal. But when it was time to pay, Tatum and Diggs (nicely) dueled over who would pick up the check. In the end, Tatum won out – and he triple tipped the server.
Talk about a clean shave! Channing Tatum showed off a very bare head while leaving an office building in Beverly Hills on Tuesday. But why the hairless look? In recent shots, Tatum displayed a full head of hair, even on set and in character for his role in 21 Jump Street. However, in a July 2 TwitPic posted by pal and costar Jonah Hill, the locks were long gone.
So what gives — does he lose his hair mid-movie? Is he staying cool for summer? Was it for another part? We know that Tatum has had no problem changing his look for movie roles in the past: for the cop thriller The Son of No One, he even grew a mustache. Regardless, we have to say he still looks smokin’ hot.
In today’s Video of the Week we have the first trailer and a new poster for Channing Tatum and Rachel McAdams’ upcoming drama ‘The Vow‘. I’m so already in love with this film!!! CHECK OUT THE TRAILER…
‘The Vow‘ is based on the real-life love story of the Mom and Dad Kim and Krickitt Carpenter who were married in 1993. Two months after their marriage, the couple’s car was hit from behind by a truck, leaving Krickitt in a coma and with amnesia after coming out of the coma. They later chronicled their story in a book called “The Vow: The Kim and Krickitt Carpenter Story‘), and the film is based on their book.
Screen Gems Studios is co-financing the movie with Spyglass Entertainment (who’s both producing and distributing the Michael Sucsy-directed film). Sucsy, who directed HBO’s award-winning film ‘Grey Gardens’, also rewrote the movie’s script.
The highly-anticipated romantic drama will hit theaters in February 10, 2012. I’ll be working closely with the studio on this one, so make sure you stay tuned to CTU for the lastest news on the film!
I have a couple new items for you guys today…First of all, I wanted to show the latest artwork featuring Channing Tatum from the extremely talented Indonesian artist Arief Kurniawan. Although his fan art may look like photos, they’re actually drawings and are always spot on. In today’s piece, Arief used an image of Chan from his gorgeous 2009 Vanity Fair photo shoot.
If this one drawing isn’t enough proof of Arief’s ability to capture Chan’s likeness with uncanny accuracy, make sure you check out all of the previous drawings that he’s allowed me to share with fans here on CTU.
I also wanted to give you guys a quick casting update for Chan’s upcoming Steven Soderbergh-directed film ‘Magic Mike‘.
As I previously reported, Chan is going to be working with the director again on the new indie film, which is a story of friendship set in the world of exotic male dancing and is inspired by Chan’s experiences early in his career. Chan is set to play the main character, who teaches a young dancer the ropes, and NYMag’s The Vulture confirmed with actor Alex Pettyfer (’I Am Number 4‘) that he will play the young dancer.
Last week, The Vulture caught up with the 21-year-old Brit at HUGO’s event honoring the Young Collectors Council of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum. Alex told the mag…
“I literally just got a phone call out of the blue. Steven called me and he goes, ‘Hey, it’s Steven Soderbergh,’ and I was like ‘Oh, okay.’ I didn’t really believe it at the time. He goes, ‘I’ve got some stuff I’m going to e-mail you and if you respond, then let me know.’ I read it and it was amazing. It’s an amazing story. It’s got some clearly amazing people attached to it. I called him back and said, ‘What do I need to do to be a part of this?’ and he said, ‘Just say yes.’ I’m a very lucky man.” I am definitely going to have to take some dance classes.”
In addition to starring in the film, Chan will also be producing the movie with his 33andOut producing partner Reid Carolin (who’s also writing the script), Nick Wechsler, and Gregory Jacobs. Rumor has it that shooting on ‘Magic Mike‘ could start as early as this August.
EXCLUSIVE: This is going to gobsmack almost everyone in Hollywood. Not only did Oscar-winning director Steven Soderbergh just choose 21-year-old newcomer Alex Pettyfer for this juicy role in Magic Mike. But also, as Deadline has previously reported, the film has such an interesting storyline because the plot revolves around Channing Tatum’s real-life stripper sojourn. Now Pettyfer will play a young Tatum baring it all while Channing plays his older mentor. Pettyfer recently starred in I Am Number Four and Beastly, and will appear this fall opposite Justin Timberlake and Amanda Seyfried for New Regency in a film that was called Now, and just changed its name today to In Time.
Soderbergh’s Magic Mike is the story of a friendship set in the world of male strippers. Tatum plays the title character, who schools a young dancer (Pettyfer) in how to hustle on and off the stage. It’s a wild summer of dancing, partying, and women. The inspiration was Channing’s own experiences as a stripper when he was 19. With Tatum, Nick Wechsler is producing with Gregory Jacobs and Reid Carolin who is writing the script. Soderbergh has called the film “sexy, funny and shocking” using Saturday Night Fever as a model.
Channing Tatum’s Steven Soderbergh-directed action film ‘Haywire‘ will reportedly hit theaters this summer. Although the official poster has not been released yet, a slew of beautifully designed concept posters (seen below) have hit the web via a Gina Carano fan site and The Playlist, and both sites are reporting that the posters may be the work of talented Los Angeles based graphic designer Neil Kellerhouse.
‘Haywire‘ is about a black ops spy (Carano) who’s betrayed by her team and goes rogue in an attempt to figure out who’s setting her up. While everyone is on the same side initially, the film supposedly features a lot of duplicity, double crosses, and reversals of allegiances.
Chan (who filmed his role in Barcelona, Spain and New Mexico last year) will play one of the elite specialists on Carano’s team. His character is a military gearhead-type who’s sent to try and bring her back in once she’s been double-crossed.
MOVIES > Haywire > On The Set
The incredible supporting cast also includes Ewan McGregor, Michael Douglas, Michael Fassbender, Antonio Banderas, Bill Paxton, Michael Angarano, and Mathieu Kassovitz. Fassbender reportedly plays an untrustworthy teammate, while Douglas ultimately proves to be an ally. McGregor, the owner of the Blackwater-type special ops team (and once a romantic interest to Carano), is instrumental in trying to make her character, Mallory Kane, take the fall for an incident that goes wrong and involves a murder.
