Polite, softly spoken and radiating a laid-back vibe, Alabama-born Channing Tatum epitomises southern charm.
He also regularly chuckles at himself and makes no secret of the fact he’s completely bewildered as to how he’s wound up a leading Hollywood action man.
Born in Cullman, a small town in America’s Deep South, Channing describes himself as being a bit of an outsider until he found football and street dance and, hey presto! his popularity was secured. It couldn’t have hurt that he was also blessed with the kind of good looks that got him spotted by a modelling scout after moving to Miami.
A successful modelling career ensued, where he worked for the likes of Dolce and Gabbana, Armani and the all-American clothing brand, Abercrombie & Fitch. Mention those modelling days to the 29-year-old actor though and he couldn’t look more embarrassed. Shaking his head and laughing, he just says it meant he “didn’t have to wait tables, which was nice”.
It was while modelling that he landed a part in a Pepsi advert which he describes as “incredible fun”, and an experience that sparked his interest in acting.
Shortly afterwards, he hit the audition trail, landing roles in the TV series CSI Miami and films such as Coach Carter and Supercross, but it was being cast in the independent film A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints, in 2006, that proved a turning point.
Partly based on director Dito Montiel’s experiences growing up on the streets of Queens in the 1980s, the film was critically-acclaimed, although it took his leading role in the street dance movie, Step Up, later that year to secure commercial success.
Playing a lad from the wrong side of the tracks who’s forced to carry out community service in a performing arts school, Step Up perfectly gelled classical ballet and hip-hop and gave Channing the chance to show off the dance moves he’d honed as a teenager.
“When I was about 15, my sister was friends with the manager of this club and I remember going to deliver these flyers. There were these guys in this circle who were flipping and doing all this crazy stuff. I was just like, ’Oh, my God. I want to do that’,” he’s said on what prompted his passion for dance.
It was during Step Up that he also met his future wife, Jenna Dewan, who plays his love interest in the film and the two got married earlier this year. “We didn’t get to have much of a honeymoon. We had a mini-moon but we’ll have the full-moon later,” he says, chuckling to himself again.
Today, with his shaven hair emphasising his pretty-boy features, he’s wearing black trousers, a white shirt and a black waist-coat that show off a physique worthy of any movie action man.
