Four newcomers entered the fray in this crowded pre-Fourth of July weekend with “Ted” from Universal, Warner Bros.’ “Magic Mike,” Lionsgate’s “Tyler Perry’s Witness Protection” and “People Like Us” from Disney all making their wide release debuts. This was a very tough weekend to predict but “Ted” and “Magic Mike” came out on top!
R-rated films were well represented this weekend with Warner Bros.’ “Magic Mike” taking it all off for an appreciative female fan base with much better-than-expected $39.1 million. Much like the “Sex and the City” films, this movie will be the centerpiece for a perfect “girls night out” and as we have seen in the past, this can be a powerful draw at the box office. Channing Tatum, who has been on a box office roll of late will bring out his devotees as well as fans of Matthew McConaughey and Joe Manganiello who take it all off for acclaimed director Steven Soderbergh. A terrific marketing campaign as well as solid word-of-mouth could fuel an even stronger than expected debut for this film that is tailor-made for the female demographic. Magic marketing gave the film a terrific better-than-expected debut as women stuffed the box office with singles and giving Soderbergh (beating 2004′s “Ocean’s Twelve” ($39,153,380) the best debut of his career if estimates hold. Channing Tatum is box office gold (had “The Vow” ($41.2M debut in Feb.) and “21 Jump Street” ($36.3M debut in March).
Matthew McConaughey, Channing Tatum, Joe Manganiello, Alex Pettyfer, Adam Rodríguez and Matt Bomer might be the actual stars of Magic Mike, but there’s a supporting cast member that hasn’t received as much recognition for the raunchy film: the thong!
The movie, directed by Steven Soderbergh, is about male strippers in Tampa, Fla., so ‘natch the actors each had to don the sexy undergarment several times during filming. Thinking back to those not-so-happy memories, the guys recently dished to The Hollywood Reporter about the trials and tribulations that occurred while wearing the super-small cover-ups:
Matthew McConaughey: “It’s a huge leap of faith to trust a thong,” the newly-married actor joked. “It’s your only protection up on stage. When I first tried it on, my body contorted. And I tried to get myself into every position to see what angles I was covering.”
Channing Tatum: “Sometimes a thong completely betrays you,” added the former male stripper. “[But] if everyone is dressed in a thong pretty much any conversation is going to be funny … It’s only weird if you make it weird.”
Joe Manganiello: “It’s hard to take yourself seriously with an American flag thong on with a strategically placed sparkler on the end of it,” the actor revealed. “Honestly, the hardest part of this movie was biting the inside of my mouth to keep from laughing, especially watching Matthew in a yellow Spandex top and tiny bike shorts, grinding on Alex Pettyfer in front of the mirror.”
Check out McConaughey, Tatum, Manganiello and company in action (and nearly naked!) when Magic Mike hits theaters Friday. Tell us: Do you plan on seeing Magic Mike this weekend?
Magic Mike is in theaters today, be sure to go check it out! =)
Stripping isn’t the most obvious apprenticeship for an actor — heck, the Screen Actors Guild doesn’t even recognize the profession. But Channing Tatum, who previously flourished with cheetah-themed thongs in the past, was able to carve a successful movie career that continues to grow. The soon-to-be A-Lister is big enough that this year, he’s even put together his own pet project, culling together his pleasantly hedonistic experiences into one magical cinematic experience. The Vow and 21 Jump Street star’s latest film, Magic Mike, brings Tatum back to the world of stripping — but don’t expect to be a carbon copy of his exotic dancing life. Why? As Tatum puts it: “You just wouldn’t believe it.”
